A Staycation At The Delta Edmonton South
I’m not sure if we’re the only ones here haha but Winter Break this year seemed REALLY long. It’s been super cold here in Edmonton ( about -30C every day) and we haven’t really been able to get outside so the idea of a “Staycation” at a local hotel with a pool was GENIUS!
We were invited by The Delta Edmonton South to spend the first weekend of the new year at their hotel. They are part of the “Edmonton’s Best Hotels” group. Long story short - when you book a hotel through their website; you get extra incentives like gas cards, gift certificates to restaurants or prepaid mastercards. No catch - you just gotta book through the Edmonton’s Best Hotels website.
WHERE WE STAYED
We stayed at the Delta Edmonton South just off of the Whitemud and Gateway Blvd. It’s iconic in our city. I remember when they painted it all these wild colours on the outside - everyone knew that hotel. But now its back to a subtle blue and white. There was great access to everything from the hotel ; a few minutes away from the river valley, snow valley and Southgate mall.
Heated underground parking was also included with our room.
DOGS
Best of all - this hotel is dog friendly. Extremely dog friendly. When we arrived there were treats for our dog Cactus and the staff always greeted him by name. In our room was a basket of treats from local pet supply store Fur Family (THANK YOU!) . Lots of places for him to go to the bathroom just outside of the hotel. Although the first night….he refused to go (diva) so I had to drive him home. Benefits of a staycation. Luckily; by the second day he got the hang of going somewhere other than home. But for NORMAL dogs haha this hotel is great.
ROOMS
There is quite a variety of rooms here and some really neat ones too. You can get these two level loft rooms that are HUGE. We didn’t stay in one of these but if you wanted to go all out ; these would be the suites to do it in!
We stayed in a bunk bed room or as the hotel calls them “ Kid Zone” rooms. It was perfect for our family.
The girls had a separate sleeping area from us and they LOVED having their own" “fort”. To be honest they were a little TOO excited and didnt sleep much the first night haha. But it was really special for them - they each had their own TV / dvd player and the hotel had a good selection of DVDs to borrow for free. Including the Paw Patrol Movie!
The suite was a generous size and there was a bathtub too which is nice with kids! Tinier bathroom but REALLY good lighting. I’m not sure why I love this but a good bathroom mirror gets major points from me.
A nice addition was having Netflix and Amazon Prime on our TV. Just sign into your account and you’re good to go! This is how we were ( thankfully) able to catch the finale of Season 4 of Yellowstone.
Wifi was also included.
POOL
One of our first stops as you know is ALWAYS the pool! We were lucky in that both times we went we had the pool to ourselves. At this time - we did NOT have to book individual pool time.
The pool was warm for the kids which is so nice and a decent size. No waterslide. We were allowed to bring pool toys in :) There is a hot tub too! Our girls are little fish haha so we spent a decent amount of time at the pool and it was a good one! It is all indoors.
There is also a big workout room with quite a bit of equipment and machines that is available to guests.
FOOD
We ordered room service one night and went to the hotel restaurant the other. Both experiences were great. There are two restaurants on site “Aurora” and “4404”. I’m pretty sure “4404” is only open for breakfast but they do have a Starbucks IN the hotel that is open during those breakfast hours. That was nice to be able to get that latte first thing in the morning ( especially because the girls had been up late the night before so excited haha).
Aurora is where we ordered our room service from as well as the dining experience we had. One of the best things is that if you eat at the restaurant while staying at the hotel- kids eat FREE. So the girls enjoyed chicken fingers and fries as well as Mac & Cheese. Their meals also included a drink and a sundae! It was awesome value.
I had the butter chicken which was really yummy - but huge. I couldn’t finish it. Bob had the burger and it was also so big he couldn’t finish (haha a rare occurrence) . Room service we had the club sandwich and the Alberta pizza; both wonderful & it was quick.
The first night we were there - we were also treated to cookies and milk. A nice touch.
I think thats the thing that really stood out the MOST about the Delta Edmonton South. You could tell they cared. Everyone went the extra mile and there was quality in the service. Things like calling our dog by his name, cookies and milk at night, a friendly chat with the barista at Starbucks. Overall is was just a really lovely stay.
