Sleeping Under The Stars in a Geodome!
I had heard a lot about Geodomes and had def seen them all over Instagram but I had no idea they were here in Alberta. One of the most unique (& Pet Friendly!) “glamping” companies out there is Glamp Good. We headed to their little piece of heaven for a night under the stars in the Boreal Forest. If you want a night you will never forget- this is it.
WHERE WE STAYED
There are currently 3 Geodomes. The Aspen, The Tamarack and The Spruce. We stayed in “The Spruce” as it had room for all 4 of us and Cactus our dog. There is a king sized bed and a futon.
The Tamarack has room for 2 and The Aspen; room for 4.
Glamp Good is about an hour south of Edmonton; near Winfield. It was easy to find ( they will send you directions once you book your geodome). The drive went quick and there was quite a bit of scenery and wildlife on the way.
Nearby there are wineries, breweries, shops, lakes and a grocery store. ESPECIALLY in the summer - you’ve got lots to do!
Plus le't’s not forget; they’re right in the middle of the woods so it’s a great way to reconnect with nature. Go for a walk, enjoy a fire, read a book ; the forest is literally your playground.
THE GEODOME
These domes are completely off grid. So that means no running water and power is solar ( so no coffee machines or hair dryers!). The solar power does suffienctly power a laptop and charge your phone. So if you had some movies preloaded; it would make for a pretty great movie night under the stars.
There are LCD lamps all around the dome so its easy to see at night. Plus you’ve got the fireplace (propane) keeping you warm and the dome beautifully lit.
Don’t be intimidated by the fireplace; there are super clear instructions on how to get it going and if you run into any trouble the owners can help you as well. (Mandy and Simon may just be the friendliest people you will meet)
All of the domes are well appointed and I really liked the style of them. You can’t take a bad picture in these things - they are so cool.
DOGS AND THE BATHROOM
When we stayed; these were the two questions popping up over and over in my inbox haha.
First things first - pets! YES Glamp Good is super pet friendly. As of right now ; they are the only Geodomes in Alberta to welcome your pets. They are welcome IN the domes but must stay off the furniture. (There is a pet sheet you get when you book as well!)
As for bathrooms. Its an outhouse situation BUT not your typical one. It is a composting toilet; so basically it looks like a normal toilet with just no flush. The bathroom was clean, smelt great and was not an unpleasant experience at all. I hate outhouses and this was just fine for me.
FOOD
If you book ( and I hope you do; I know you will love it!) its important to note that you have to bring all of your own dishes, cookware and food. As well as drinking water. Just like camping.
Each dome has a camp stove and a fire pit. There are also a BBQ you can use. When we were there we made macaroni and hot dogs for dinner. Oatmeal in the morning. Basic, yes, but goes along with the theme haha!
I’m not really a great planner when it comes to meals (no shocker there) but if you had a stove top meal you could whip up at home; you could def do that here. It was a good camp stove provided.
There is also a shared greenhouse with table and chairs to cook or dine in if desired!
As well; you could always go into town and grab a bite to eat!
WHAT TO BRING
Boots. We went in April and I wore my rubber boots - GREAT decision. Wear footwear that you can walk in the forest in and get on and off easily as you have to take off your shoes / boots before entering the Geodome.
Extra blankets. It did get surprisingly chilly at night. The fireplace kept us pretty warm but it was nice to have an extra blanket. If you are staying in a geo dome for 4; you will have to bring an extra blanket and pillow for the futon. Bedding is provided for the main ( king) bed.
Food. As mentioned above.
A Book. These dome are off grid. There is a lot of down time. Enjoy it.
Preloaded movies. Ok if a book is not your thing make sure you have some movies downloaded to a laptop or a phone. (*Note we did get cell service out here)
